You may think you don't have processes in your small business but you do. We all follow certain steps when we carry out administrative tasks even if we don't realise it. Just because those procedures aren't written down doesn't mean they're not there.
If you don't have any easily identifiable processes in your business then you are almost certainly not working as efficiently as you could be.
Here are 4 key reasons why your small business needs to have processes in place.
There are certain things that we have to do over and over in our businesses. Raising invoices, onboarding clients, creating PowerPoint presentations, recording expenses - they all require us to perform the same actions on a regular basis. However it takes time to remember how to carry out sequences of tasks if we don't do them every day. Taking the time to write down the steps involved so that you have a process to refer back to can save you a lot of time in the long run.
2. It avoids mistakes
We're all busy people. If you're holding all the steps to all your processes in your head it stands to reason that you'll forget something every now and then. Having a written procedure that you can refer to when you need it makes it far less likely that steps will get missed. Which means fewer (and ideally no) mistakes.
3. You can delegate
One of the most common reasons put forward for not delegating tasks is "By the time I've explained how to do it I may as well have done it myself."
But what if you have the process written down for someone to follow step by step?
Then the delegation is simply a quick conversation, hand the document over and let the other person get on with it. Easy peasy and you've saved everyone a bucketload of time (see also point 1).
4. It reduces stress
Running a small business isn't easy. It can be stressful finding new clients, serving existing clients to the best of your ability and keeping on top of the day-to-day admin. If you have written processes that save you time, reduce the opportunity for error and make it easier to delegate it all adds up to less stress.
Which in turn means you can be calmer, focus on growing (and sustaining) your business and enjoy it instead of running round like a headless chicken.
